Actaeon was wandering in the woods looking for his straying hounds <br />
when he, by chance, stumbled into a clearing <br />
where he witnessed the Goddess Diana bathing naked with her nymphs.</p><p>
Ovid says " she was renewing herself at a source" (a stream).</p><p>
The Goddess was indignant at his interruption and interferrance, <br />
no matter that it was unintended.
<p> </p>
<p>She turned Actaeon into a stag <br />
and he was hunted by his own hounds.<br />
His friends and fellow huntsmen <br />
hearing the full cry of the hound\'s voices <br />
joined in the hunt.</p>
<p>They called out, <br />
echoing the hounds voices ringing through the woods </p><p>
"Where are you Actaeon "<br />
"Where are you Actaeon ? You are missing a great hunt".</p>

oil on canvas - 72 x 54 inches (2017).Behind the Saint is Abbotsbury\'s Chapel on the hill overlooking the sea and the Chesil lagoon. On her left is the ancient monastry of St. Catherine\'s at Sinai where her body was taken by Angels after her martyrdom. In the foreground I have attempted to give the wheel, the instrument of her martrydom a gyroscopic energy to enliven the idea of a Catherine Wheel. <br />
Historians suggest the Chapel was built as a shrine and a place of pilgrimage - holding a finger of the Saint brought back from the monastry of St. Catherine at Sinai. There are maybe 27 fingers of St.Catherine in Christian institutions around Europe. The Penguin Book of Saints says there is no historical basis for St.Catherine; she did not exist. <br />
But there is a well documented historical figure living in the same place at the same time as the fabled St.Catherine, 400 AD, about both women are told the same anecdotes, Hypatia of Alexandria. She was flayed alive in the street by Christians with oyster shells because she was a witch, they considered science was witchcraft.<br />
Hypatia was the daughter of philosopher Theon and like him she became leader of the Alexandrian Library. She was a Platonic Philosopher, a mathematician whose mathematics are still relevant, she was a scientist and invented the hydrometer, she or her team were responsible for the Astrolabe, the instrument of navigation for a thousand years.<br />
I have placed on her belt an Astrolabe; maybe this was the wheel of St.Catherine in the Christian story compensating a fairy tale Saint for the martyred significant woman of science and phlosophy. <br />

Cells rearrange,<br />
the continuous serpent is not transcendent.<br />
Johnny is a different person, now.</p><p>
Bodily seizure of a lucid St.Vitus<br />

A head pops up<br />
out of the material immersion<br />
